Ex d (flameproof) enclosures contain any internal explosion, preventing it from propagating to the outside. This is a common and robust method for flowmeters installed in Zone 1 areas.

Ex ia (intrinsic safety) limits the electrical energy available in the circuit to a level below the ignition threshold. It is often used for transmitters and sensors in Zone 0 and Zone 1 applications.
